Until about 2012, if you wanted to have a tattoo removed via laser treatment, all the lasers used technology that was 20 years old. 20 years! That was like buying a new VHS player in 2012 – the machine is new, but the technology is 20 years old. Might get the job done, but 20 years is a long time….slide rule anyone?
Along came the Picosure Laser by Cynosure in 2012. It was a real breakthrough in laser technology, using much shorter, picosecond bursts of laser light. It can remove certain tattoo ink colors much faster than any previous tattoo removal laser, without question. However, as we are beholden to the laws of physics on this earth, the Picosure laser wavelength is challenged by several tattoo ink colors. As of this writing (February, 2015), the Picosure’s only wavelength is 765 nm, Alexandrite. It may have other wavelengths in the future. Again, it is the superior laser for certain tattoo ink colors, but not for all colors.
Now comes the Enlighten laser by Cutera. It has two laser light wavelengths different from the Picosure, the 532nm, and 1064nm. These two laser wavelengths are in both nanosecond and picosecond speed with the Enlighten. To have two laser wavelengths, both at nano and picosecond speed, in the same machine, is truly remarkable. It is the superior laser for certain tattoo ink colors, yet, like the Picosure, it is challenged by other tattoo colors.
McGuiness Dermatology now has both the Picosure and Enlighten lasers in our practice. Having both, is unique and rare, currently found in less than five practices in the United States. In combination, McGuiness Dermatology can now truly treat successfully nearly all tattoo ink colors with the latest picosecond speed lasers. There are a few times we still briefly use the nanosecond pulse technology in tattoo removal treatments, so having that option is still important.
