Laser hair removal is well established as a highly effective for long-lasting to permanent hair removal. Several treatments are necessary, and occasional “touch up” treatments may be needed. The large majority of patients are very satisfied. There are several types of lasers available. We use the Cutera XLHR, a tried and true technology.
Treatment Of Facial Hair
Unwanted facial hair may appear at any time in life, starting in childhood. The hair could be very light and fine, or dark and coarse. For light/fine hair, there is a prescription cream called Vaniqa that is very good at suppressing the hair growth. It must be used long-term, and use of the cream stops, the hair will begin to grow again. Dermaplaning is also frequently used to treat fine, light (often called vellus) hairs. The process is an in-office procedure that removes the hair and outermost superficial layers of skin. It is essentially painless and is a brief treatment. It, too, must be done periodically, or the hair does begin to grow back.
Laser Hair Removal for Dark, Coarse Hair
Dark, coarse hair is most often treated with laser hair removal. It requires several treatments to prevent regrowth, and even then, it is not always permanent. If this hair does regrow after treatment, it is almost always fine, and not as dense. This hair could also be treated with electrolysis, which we do not do. Electrolysis usually requires many treatments for it to work. Many people choose to shave this type of hair, which does not make the hair grow faster, denser, or darker.
