Addressing Questions and Misconceptions About a Nose Job

A nose job, also known as a rhinoplasty, remains one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. Each year, over 350,000 patients undergo this surgery to reshape their nose. While most notable as a cosmetic procedure, it boasts medical benefits as well.

At McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we help people breathe better and boost their confidence with a nose job in Plano. Before patients enjoy the range of benefits from this procedure, they usually have a few questions and concerns regarding reshaping their nose. All concerns are valid, and we’re addressing them here to inform our guests and clear up any misconceptions.

1. Will I still look like myself?

It’s normal for patients to worry that they won’t recognize their face in the mirror. Especially when undergoing the procedure for reconstructive and medical reasons. No matter the reason why you’re considering a nose job, we will always focus on enhancing your natural features, not changing your identity. Dr. Natalie Barton, our board-certified plastic surgeon, tailors your procedure to satisfy your individual aesthetic and provide functional benefits. You will still look like you, but with a natural improvement.

2. Is a nose job painful?

We administer anesthesia before surgery, so most patients find this procedure tolerable with minimal discomfort. During recovery, swelling, pressure, or congestion may occur, but can be managed with medication and by following post-procedure instructions provided after surgery.

3. Will I have visible scars?

A common concern we hear from patients is regarding scarring. After all, surgeries require incisions that oftentimes leave scars. However, the majority of rhinoplasty procedures performed by Dr. Barton employ a closed technique, hiding incisions within the nose to prevent visible scarring.

In some cases, the procedure may necessitate an open technique, involving a small incision at the nasal base. Fortunately, the incision generally heals very well and is barely noticeable. If you’re worried about visible scarring, you can visit our dermatologist to find treatments and products that accelerate wound healing.

4. How immediate are results?

Often, patients believe that they’ll walk out of our office with a noticeably new and improved nose. Realistically, you may notice a slight difference immediately after your surgery, but you’ll also experience swelling that can take months to resolve. It may take up to 1 year before your nose fully refines for final results.

5. Is surgery my only option?

Surgery works best for permanent, dramatic results or for patients looking to improve breathing. However, for long-lasting aesthetic improvements, we offer a nonsurgical rhinoplasty using dermal fillers. Patients can take the injectable route to improve the following aesthetic concerns:

  • Smooth out small bumps on the bridge of the nose
  • Improve nasal symmetry
  • Lift a drooping nasal tip
  • Enhance the appearance of the nose without reducing its size

Please remember, this is a temporary, though long-lasting, treatment for cosmetic concerns only. Nonsurgical options won’t help patients with deviated septums or those needing post-illness breathing restoration.
