Your Botox appointment is quick, usually taking less than 30 minutes, and most people experience minimal discomfort. One of our skilled specialists will have you make a series of facial expressions to determine the target needing treatment. After assessing the target areas, they use a fine needle to inject small amounts of wrinkle relaxer where facial muscles are creating wrinkles. After your appointment, you’ll need about 4 hours of downtime.

Start Your Journey With McGuiness
Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, booking an appointment at McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery is fast.
At McGuinness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we have three different wrinkle relaxers: Dysport, Xeomin, and Botox. Each one is a neuromodulator designed to relax targeted facial muscles. Each of these products has a different formulation of botulinum toxin. The different recipes affect how soon and how long you see results. During your consultation, we discuss your medical history and goals to figure out which one is best for you.
Dysport
Dysport tends to spread more easily, making it ideal for larger areas like the forehead.
Xeomin
The purest form of wrinkle relaxers is Xeomin. It doesn’t contain any additional proteins, reducing the risk of antibody resistance.
Botox
The most popular brand of wrinkle relaxer is Botox because of how fast it creates results. It can reach delicate areas and usually lasts around 3 to 4 months.
At McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we emphasize the importance of preparing for your Botox session during your consultation. For the best results, avoid the following for 4 days before your session:
- Blood thinners
- Alcohol
- NSAIDs
- Harsh exfoliating treatments
- Waxing or tweezing
- Chemical peels
- Dehydration
Post-care is very important for getting the best results from your Botox appointment. For at least 4 hours following your session, you need to stay hydrated and avoid lying down, exercising, or touching the treated areas.
We also suggest you avoid:
- Sweating
- Rubbing, massaging, or compressing the injection area
- Blood thinners
- Alcohol
- NSAIDs
At the time of your appointment, our team will discuss any side effects to look out for. Some common side effects include mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. These side effects will usually resolve within just a few days. More serious side effects such as drooping eyelids or eyebrows happen if the Botox spreads to nearby muscles—but this rarely happens.
