Laser tattoo removal uses bursts of light energy that break the ink pigment into smaller particles. Over time, these particles flush out of your body. Patients describe the feeling of this treatment as being similar to getting the tattoo in the first place. Before your appointment, your provider will explain how the treatment works and what to expect in your sessions.

Start Your Journey With McGuiness
Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, booking an appointment at McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery is fast.
At McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we will inform you of the estimated length and amount of your sessions your tattoo will require. It will typically require multiple treatments over the course of a few months to remove your tattoo.
A variety of factors can affect the amount of necessary sessions and the session duration such as:
- Tattoo size
- Tattoo location
- Ink colors
- Type of tattoo ink used
- Age of the tattoo
- Your skin type
The reason we can’t finish removing your tattoo in one session is because of how tattoo artists create them. Tattoos are essentially layers of ink. In order to rid you of the tattoo, we have to break down every layer. This takes time.
Right after every session, you should apply an ice pack to the area that was targeted. This will soothe the treatment area. Depending on your situation, you might need to use a topical antibiotic cream or ointment to your skin. You should also bandage the treated area to protect it.
If you shower the next day, try to refrain from scrubbing the area. When going outdoors you need to cover the treated area with sunscreen when you go outdoors. Avoid picking at your skin as it may cause scarring.
Your provider will discuss post-care instructions on how you should take care of your skin after your appointment.
Before your appointment, you will want to prepare by doing the following:
- Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight
- Apply SPF 30+ to the area up to 4 weeks prior
- Reduce/ stop smoking up to 4 weeks prior
- Shave the area 24 hours prior to treatment
At the time of booking your session, a member of our team will go over the best ways that you can prepare to get your tattoo removed.
