Just about everyone has experienced a skin rash at some point in their life. These skin conditions range in appearance and severity. Some rashes burn, others itch, some you don’t feel, but they all alter your appearance.
You might be familiar with rashes from external factors like allergic reactions to food, chemicals, and the surrounding environment. Some rashes are non-threatening, and you can treat them with a soothing ointment until it goes away.
Unfortunately, other rashes can be contagious, chronic, or infectious. That’s why it’s best to see a board-certified dermatologist who can properly diagnose and treat this skin condition. Starting with a skin consultation in Plano, we can help you find your relief.
What is a skin consultation?
During a skin consultation, our team examines your skin to evaluate its health and what’s causing the condition. We also discuss your medical history, diet, lifestyle, and skin care routine. All of this information helps us determine what kind of rash you’re battling and the best treatment to get it cleared up.
A skin consultation also allows us to examine moles, warts, acne, and screen for skin cancer. Our dermatology office can optimize your skin health and wellness and provide guidance to help restore, protect, and maintain the health of your skin.
What are the different types of rashes?
Most people know what a rash looks like, but diagnosing them is a bit more challenging. To make it simple, we categorize them into infectious and non-infectious.
Infectious Rashes
An infectious rash results from bacteria, fungi, or viruses penetrating the skin. If you believe you have an infectious rash, contact our office immediately so we can help you find relief and prevent the rash from spreading to other people.
- Ringworm – This infectious rash presents itself as a ring-like circle, with an empty center. This infection spreads through skin contact with an infected person or animal.
- Scabies – This infectious rash results from microscopic mites burrowing into your skin to live. Scabies transmit through sleeping in an infected bed or wearing infected clothing. They are very easily spread and extremely difficult to get rid of.
- Shingles – This infectious rash appears as a single strip of blisters wrapping around your torso. You may also notice them around your eyes, neck, or face. Shingles develop from the same virus that causes chickenpox.
Non-Infectious Rashes
Non-infectious rashes don’t spread but still need treatment.
- Rosacea – This rash usually affects individuals in their mid-30s. The skin shows redness, bumps, and visible blood vessels in this long-term condition. Although we don’t know what causes this ongoing skin condition, treatments exist.
- Psoriasis – This rash causes inflammation, resulting in thick areas of scaly, discolored skin. Having an over-reactive immune system causes psoriasis. This skin condition doesn’t have a cure, but treatment options help manage symptoms.
- Eczema – This rash weakens your skin’s barrier function, causing it to become dry, itchy, and bumpy. Treatments can help manage symptoms of Eczema, but as of now, researchers have not found a cure.
