Your tattoo seemed like such a good idea at the time, but maybe not so much anymore. You’re not alone if you regret your tattoo. At least 25% of Americans do. Fortunately, with modern technology, your “permanent decisions” aren’t as indefinite as they used to be.
At McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we offer tattoo removal in Plano. You probably recognize lasers as a popular skin treatment to rejuvenate the skin. While they are effective in facial aesthetics, the technology can also remove unwanted ink.

How Do Lasers Work?
For tattoo removal, our laser uses light energy on the treatment area to break up the ink beneath the skin. This process doesn’t work immediately. Instead, your body gradually removes the ink through natural processes. You will need multiple treatments to effectively remove the entire tattoo, which we can discuss in advance.
How many treatments will I need?
You may know that you will need more than 1 tattoo removal session, but how many exactly? It all depends on a few factors. The first being the age of the tattoo. The older the tattoo, the easier it is to quickly remove ink. Size is also considered, as larger tattoos require more treatments and time than smaller tattoos. Finally, the colors play a role because the light energy picks up darker colors like black more easily than lighter colors like yellow.
What should I do before and after a tattoo removal session?
As with any laser treatment, you should avoid direct sun exposure and wear sunscreen at least 4 weeks prior to your appointment. We also recommend refraining from smoking during this time. After your tattoo removal, apply ice to the target area to soothe the skin. You should also refrain from scrubbing or rubbing the area until you complete your sessions.
