Our bodies change as we age. While this transformation happens before our eyes, it often also catches us off guard.
It seems that overnight, your breasts shifted downward and started to sag. While this is completely normal, it can still impact how you see yourself. You may be thinking, “I used to have perky breasts… What happened?” or, “They had great shape, now they’re flat. How can I fix this?”
At McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we can provide the answers. Our team works to reverse the hands of time and give your breasts a more elevated, full appearance with a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy.
In Plano, we hear a lot of questions regarding this surgical procedure. So we are here to clear up the confusion and misconceptions.
What Is a Mastopexy?
A mastopexy is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and repositions your breasts on your chest.
What Caused My Breasts to Sag?
While this question is not directly related to the surgery, it is something many patients ask. Our answer: Life transitions can change how your breasts look, including:
- Significant weight loss
- Menopause
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Aging
- Gravity
These shifts make your skin less elastic, causing your breasts to sag or droop. A mastopexy can restore them to a more youthful appearance.
Will a Mastopexy Increase My Breast Size?
No, a mastopexy does not increase breast size. Instead, the repositioning of the breast(s) makes your chest appear more full and improves breast symmetry and contour.
If you would like larger breasts, we can combine this surgery with a breast fat transfer or breast augmentation for enhancements in your breast size, shape, and position.
Does a Mastopexy Cause Scarring?
Yes, a mastopexy does cause scarring. In order to remove the excess skin, your surgeon must make incisions that typically fade over time. The severity of scarring depends on the techniques Dr. Barton uses, which she can go over with you during your consultation.
How Long is Recovery From a Mastopexy?
For the first week, we recommend resting and allowing your body to heal. You’ll receive special post-care instructions along with medications, bandages, and compression garments to accelerate the recovery process.
After a week, you can return to light activities such as gentle aerobics (think walking or biking). Within 4 to 6 weeks, you can return to normal activities and more strenuous exercises. If you have any questions during your recovery process, feel free to call our office for advice and guidance.
