How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal uses a precise, focused beam of light to target the pigment (melanin) in your hair follicles. When the follicles absorb the light, it converts to heat energy and destroys the hair follicle, inhibiting further growth.
Splendor X Laser for Hair Removal
At McGuiness, we use theSplendor X laser by Lumenis, a one-of-a-kind device with several wavelengths that allow us to customize your treatment to your aesthetic goals.
Using BLEND X technology that’s integrated into the Splendor X, this laser works effectively for a wide range of skin tones, including dark or tanned skin.
Splendor X guarantees precise, consistent coverage without the risk of missed or overlapped spots with its square-spot technology. This also shortens the treatment time while working 37% quicker than competitors on larger treatment areas. The dual cooling technology increases comfort, reducing pain or discomfort as well.

Not only does this laser meet your needs for laser hair removal in Plano, Prosper, and Flower Mound. It also effectively treats skin concerns like wrinkles, vascular lesions, and pigmented lesions.
→ For a more targeted approach to addressing vascular lesions, we offer theExcel V laser treatment, which targets veins using ablative and non ablative green light wavelengths. Read more about Excel V in this blog.

Why Does Laser Hair Removal Require Multiple Sessions?
This is a common question we receive at McGuiness, and we understand the confusion. If the light is destroying the hair follicle then and there, why should you need multiple sessions of laser hair removal in Plano, Prosper, and Flower Mound?
Here’s why: your hair grows in 4 phases.
- Anagen (growth phase): The hair follicles are rich in pigment and the hair is actively growing.
- Catagen (transitional phase): Follicles start to shrink and stop producing pigment.
- Telogen (resting phase): Hair neither grows nor falls. It rests on your scalp for 2 to 3 months.
- Exogen (shedding phase): Hair sheds from your body and the cycle restarts.
Of these 4 phases, hair removal takes place in the anagen phase when the pigment is rich. The process takes time because each strand is at a different point in the cycle, so the treatment area requires several sessions as the hair enters this phase of growth.
As you complete your sessions, you’ll notice a reduction of hair growth in the treatment area, and hair will become progressively thinner, finer, and more sparse than before.
We typically recommend at least 6 sessions to remove unwanted hair. But the amount of sessions differs depending on the treatment area, thickness of hair, and other factors that we can discuss during your consultation.
Are Results From Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
Laser hair removal yields a permanent reduction of hair in the treatment area. However, we can’t promise that you won’t have sparse hairs reappearing long after you finish your sessions for laser hair removal in Plano, Prosper, and Flower Mound.
Unfortunately, hormonal changes and genetic predispositions can encourage new hair growth over time. In other cases, dormant follicles regenerate, and the hair grows, though lighter and thinner than before.
If you notice hair growing back, you can always schedule a maintenance session with our team. In this case, we can book 1 to 2 maintenance sessions per year.
Am I a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Our Splendor X can treat all skin tones, making it an effective option for most patients wishing to reduce unwanted hair. It works best on dark hair that has a lot of pigment, but can work on gray or blonde hairs as well.

Who Is Not a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
The following conditions may exclude you from being a candidate for laser hair removal:
- Light-sensitive skin
- Existing lesions
- Rosacea
- Chronic acne in the treatment area
Additionally, if you have a fresh tan (less than a week old) or have a sunburn, we will have you reschedule your laser hair removal in Plano, Prosper, and Flower Mound, to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.
The Process for Laser Hair Removal at McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery
From start to finish, here’s what you can expect for your laser hair removal sessions.
Consultation
You’ll meet with a member of our team in one of our medical aesthetic offices. Your provider will review your medical history and assess your skin to make sure this treatment is safe for you.
Next, we’ll discuss the areas you’re wanting to target. Your provider will give you an estimate of how many sessions you’ll need to be hair-free.
Before you leave, you’ll schedule your laser hair removal appointment and receive pre-care instructions to follow.
Pre-Care Instructions
We ask that you follow these instructions before each session for laser hair removal in Plano:
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and tanning creams for 4 weeks to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.
- Refrain from waxing or plucking the hair from the treatment area 2 to 3 days before you’re scheduled to come in. Removing the hair follicle interferes with the laser’s efficacy and ability to target the pigment.
- Shave the treatment area the night before each session. This allows the light beam to focus on the follicle, rather than targeting the hair shaft.
Treatment
Please arrive with clean, makeup-, oil-, and lotion-free skin. If you have any piercings or jewelry near the treatment area, we ask you to remove them.
We have 4 laser specialists on our team who can complete this treatment for you:
Each of these providers has completed thorough training in laser technology, ensuring a safe and effective treatment for you.
Your provider will use the Splendor X device on your skin to rapidly and comfortably target hairs in the anagen phase. You can expect the session to last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
You shouldn’t feel any discomfort. At most, the SplendorX provides a minor warming sensation. However, if you’re worried about pain, please talk to your laser specialist, and we can discuss options to improve your comfort throughout each session.
Post-Care Instructions
After each session for laser hair removal in Plano, Prosper, or Flower Mound, please follow these instructions for best results:
- Place a cool compress on the treatment area to reduce pain and swelling.
- Use high SPF sunscreen.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Avoid harsh cleansers or exfoliating products that may irritate your skin.
Downtime & Results
You don’t need to clear your calendar or plan for any social downtime. If you are going in the sun, wear sun-protective clothing like long sleeves, pants, or hats to cover the treatment spot.
After just a few sessions, you should notice fewer hairs. An added benefit of laser hair removal is your skin appears smoother as hair gradually becomes more sparse.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
As if hair-free skin wasn’t enough, laser hair removal boasts the following benefits.
Saves Money
Although tweezing, waxing, and shaving seem more affordable, the accumulated cost of replacing the supplies adds up quickly. With laser hair removal, we present you with a transparent price for your laser hair removal, with the option to sign up for a payment plan through Cherry financing. Now, you can save money in the long run with this solution that lasts.
Saves Time
Your time is valuable, why waste it on shaving or waxing, especially if the hair grows right back within days or weeks?
It’s estimated that women spend 72 days over the course of their lifetime shaving their legs. That’s 1728 hours! But what about the other parts of your body, which aren’t even included in that estimation?
Women and men can save time with laser hair removal. Giving them the freedom to enjoy their days and nights stubble free.
Reduces Risk
Short-term hair removal solutions come with quite the risk. While most people struggle with minor nicks or razor burn, you can also end up with ingrown hairs or folliculitis.
Our laser specialists reduce the risk that comes with at-home solutions. Instead, you enjoy silky smooth skin, free of hair, burns, nicks, or cuts.
