What to Consider
Making the decision to have a breast augmentation is a big step, and it comes with several important choices along the way.
From the type of implant to the shape to the texture, here’s what you should consider for your personalized procedure.
What to Consider
Making the decision to have a breast augmentation is a big step, and it comes with several important choices along the way.
From the type of implant to the shape to the texture, here’s what you should consider for your personalized procedure.
Type of Implant
We offer saline and silicone implants, both of which are FDA-approved for breast augmentation. Both types of implants have specific benefits, appealing to the needs of each individual patient and their preferences.
Saline
Saline implants contain a sterile water solution within a protective shell, providing a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. If they rupture, your body simply absorbs the saline and naturally disposes of it.
For patients who are slender and possess a limited amount of breast tissue, saline implants might not be the optimal choice due to their increased susceptibility to rippling compared to silicone implants.
Silicone
Silicone implants feature silicone gel inside an outer shell, resulting in a feel and look closer to natural breast tissue than saline. However, if silicone implants rupture, the gel could leak into your breasts. We require follow-up appointments to make sure your implants are in good shape.
Breast Augmentation Shapes
Not all breasts look the same. Therefore, not all implants do either. We offer a range of different shapes to complement your anatomy.
Round
This implant has a consistent shape, resulting in symmetrical breasts and enhanced fullness at the top.
Teardrop
A teardrop implant is tapered at the top and fuller at the bottom. This shape mimics a natural breast slope.
Gummy Bear
A gummy bear shape is made of a thicker and firmer silicone than others, meaning they are form-stable and maintain their shape even if the implant shell breaks. Gummy bear implants offer more projection at the bottom that tapers at the top.
Texture
You can choose between smooth or textured implants for your breast augmentation.
Smooth
These move naturally within your breast pocket and feel soft.
Textured
Textured implants have a “rough” surface that helps them adhere to your breast tissue. The texture also reduces movement and rotation.
Incision Placement
Another consideration for your breast augmentation involves the placement of the implants, whether you would like them below or above the chest muscle, and where you would like the incision to be made. You have 3 options for incision placement:
- Inframammary: Under the breast
- Peri-areolar: Around the areola
- Axillary: Under the armpit
During the consultation, Dr. Barton will discuss which incision placement she recommends for your anatomy, as well as the implant type, shape, and texture.
Benefits of Breast Augmentations
Many individuals seek breast augmentation for a variety of personal reasons, aiming to achieve a more balanced silhouette and enhance their overall confidence. Here are a few benefits you can experience from this surgery.
Breast Enhancements
One of the most common reasons for breast augmentation is to add volume. This helps if your boobs are smaller than you would like, or if you’ve lost breast volume from significant weight loss or aging.
Cleavage Improvements
A breast augmentation can help bring breasts closer together if you feel your cleavage is too wide. Alternatively, we can try to widen the space between your breasts if you feel it’s too narrow.
Symmetrical
Uneven breasts are quite common. Many people have distinctions in size, shape, or position between their right and left breasts. Still, if you’re unhappy with asymmetry or differences in your breasts, this surgery can make them more even.
Fat Transfer: An Alternative or Addition to Breast Implants
It’s possible to add more volume to your breasts without implants. Instead, we can complete a fat transfer, using fat from other areas of your body to fill out the breasts.
You can also include a fat transfer as an additional step in your breast augmentation to help conceal implant edges, reduce the appearance of rippling, and add a more natural-looking touch to your implants.
This procedure involves taking fat from a donor area of your body, like your abdomen or thighs, using advanced liposuction techniques. Then, Dr. Barton purifies the fat and injects it into your breasts.
Unlike breast implants, a fat grafting procedure can last a lifetime.

Start Your Journey With McGuiness
Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, booking an appointment at McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery is fast.
Dr. Barton places incisions in concealable locations around your breast, so even when wearing a bra or swimsuit top, they won’t be too noticeable.
As a reminder, too, scars do fade, especially when you follow the post-care instructions given to you by Dr. Barton.
At McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we offer various treatments at our medical aesthetics practices to help speed up this process. Once your scars are healed, you can revisit our team for:
- Microneedling – A minimally invasive treatment that involves the use of a handheld device equipped with tiny needles to stimulate your body’s natural healing abilities. This improves skin cell regeneration (replacing old, dead skin cells with new, healthy ones).
- Laser skin treatments – Our laser devices harness the power of light to stimulate your body’s natural healing abilities and target skin concerns like post-surgery scars.
Both of these treatments stimulate collagen production, a vital protein in your body that keeps your skin strong, firm, and tight. It also aids in wound healing and producing new, healthy skin cells. Microneedling and laser skin treatments improve collagen production and effectively fade scars while boosting your skin health.
At McGuiness Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we offer two types of breast implants. Both of these methods are great breast augmentation procedures that can enhance the volume of your breasts. We perform breast augmentation services using saline or silicone implants.
Saline breast implants are breast implants that your provider fills with sterile saline which is salt water. This means that if the implant ruptures inside of your breast, you would simply absorb the saline and naturally dispose of it.
Silicone breast implants use silicone gel. If these implants break, the gel could leak into your breast. You may need to make follow-up appointments to make sure your implants are working properly.
Make sure to be detailed and honest about your medical history to help your provider determine the right type of breast implant for you.
Before your breast augmentation, please follow these instructions:
- Stop smoking at least 4 to 6 weeks before surgery.
- Arrange for transportation and post-surgery support.
- Avoid alcohol or blood-thinning medications at least 1 to 2 weeks before surgery.
Dr. Barton may give you more personalized instructions based on your unique treatment plan. Please follow these as closely as you can in order to support a successful surgery and smooth recovery.
For your breast augmentation consultation, please bring the following:
- Medical records.
- A list of your current medications and supplements.
- Inspiration photos of people with a similar body type who have your ideal breast shape and size.
- A list of questions or concerns that you may have regarding this surgery.
After reviewing your medical history and making sure that you are a candidate for a breast augmentation, Dr. Barton takes the time to set realistic expectations with you. She shows you before and after photos from previous breast augmentation surgeries to give you a better idea of what your outcome could look like.
Breast augmentation does not fix the sagging that your breasts may suffer from. We offer breast lift services to help with sagging breasts and give them a fuller, lifted look. Reach out to a trusted member of our team to learn how breast lifts can pair with your breast augmentation.
You need to prioritize your recovery process following your breast augmentation appointment. After your breast augmentation, should:
- Take pain medication prescribed by your specialists.
- Use ointment or cream for incision sites.
- Clean gauze to cover the incision sites.
- Wear loose, comfortable, button-down shirts.
You should also understand the side effects that you may feel after your session. Following your appointment, you will most likely experience soreness and increased sensitivity in your nipples. During your consultation, your provider will go over this while giving you the opportunity to ask any other questions about breast augmentation.
No, getting a breast augmentation is not a permanent procedure, though they are long lasting, typically implants last for 10 to 20 years.
If you wish to maintain the new shape and volume that breast implants provide, you’ll eventually need a replacement. This also reduces your risk of complications like rippling, rupturing, or capsular contracture.
A more permanent option is fat grafting, which takes fat from a donor area of your body, like your abdomen and thighs, and transfers it to your breasts.
Dr. Barton will make you fully aware of the risks and side effects of a breast augmentation. A few of which include:
- Lack of nipple sensation
- Changes in nipple sensation
- Infections
- Hemoatoma
- Leakage
- Rupturing
- Capsular contracture
Understanding the risks and side effects emphasises the importance of finding a board-certified plastic surgeon like our very own Dr. Natalie Barton.
Anyone with her certification has completed years of extensive surgical training, passed comprehensive exams, and continues their education each year.
These credentials signify expert, safe care, and promise lower complication rates than surgeons who have not achieved this rigorous standard.
Dr. Barton will determine that this procedure is not safe for you if you fall under the following categories:
- Are currently pregnant or nursing.
- Have a medical condition preventing surgery.
- Are in poor general health.
- Have unrealistic expectations regarding the outcome of a breast augmentation.
- Have active infections in the treatment area.
- Have untreated skin conditions in the treatment area.
